Africa Business Partners (ABP) is a well-known consulting firm in Japan that is dedicated exclusively to supporting African businesses. Who are your clients?
A: Since our establishment in 2012, we have assisted clients looking to both start and expand their businesses in Africa. While most of our clients are Japanese companies, we also support companies from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and, interestingly, Africa itself. Notably, South African, Egyptian and Moroccan companies are actively seeking opportunities to invest in other African nations and boost expansion between regions like Kenya in East Africa and Nigeria in West Africa. We focus on supporting these "Africa to Africa" business expansion efforts.
How does ABP assist clients in navigating the diverse African markets?
A: We have a footprint in 7 African countries supported by our local staff and extensive experience spanning 40 countries across the continent. Each market is distinct with unique expectations, potential, economic dynamics, and business culture. Our expertise encompasses strategic development, backed by comprehensive research and in-depth understanding of each market. As our name of "Africa Business Partners" suggests, we facilitate connections between our clients and African companies, ensuring effective communication to prevent misunderstanding. Our practical implementation support includes sales assistance, informed by culturally attuned insights. We offer a variety of support services in alignment with our company's motto: "Fully support the advancement of African business."
Forty years ago, Japan was as active in Africa as China is today -- now, the time has come again.
What is your vision for Africa-Japan business collaborations?
A: We are the only company that understands the nuances and the right approach to facilitate collaboration between Japanese and African companies. Historically, Japanese companies were very active in Africa from the 1950s to the 1980s, similar to China’s current involvement. However, as Japan’s economy has evolved, so has the adaptation of successful collaboration styles. Currently, many Japanese companies are restructuring their business strategies for the African market. Geographic distance and security are not barriers; a successful business model and implementation strategy tailored for African markets and Japanese companies, grounded in cultural understanding and experience, is essential for success. We see great potential in this collaboration.
Which industries hold potential for collaboration between Africa and Japan?
A: The automobile industry is the largest in Japan; however, there are several other promising sectors, including machinery and equipment, chemicals, and materials. We believe these industries have the capacity to contribute to the modernization of African manufacturers and unlock Africa's potential. Manufacturing presents an excellent opportunity for collaboration between Africa and Japan. Additionally, we have collaborated with clients across various sectors, including agriculture, energy, healthcare, construction, consumer services, ICT services, and tech startups.
